Julie,

If the Prairie Primer looks so intimidating, why not just decide to pick one book and pick out some of the activities listed? Don't think you have to do them all.

Dear Wendy,

I am lately come to the Moore Formula boards (though there was a time a couple (?) years ago when I was on the old e-list) and am wending my way through old posts, looking for help and inspiration--and courage to try unit studies.

I have the *Prairie Primer*, but everytime I sat down to work up some lessons plans I was just overwhelmed by what was in that book! A bit too "workbooky" and the subjects seemed a bit contrived as well. Perhaps that is what has scared me away from unit studies? But we LOVE the Little House books. A unit study using them ought to be perfect! So I thought I ought to be able to make up my own... but just never have.

Anyway. My question is--now that it's November--how did your Little House unit go? :)

I used the Prairie Primer one year. I skipped many of the activities, because there would not have been the interest. However, I did add some things, too. I liked it, because I took it for what I could use it for. I never read the Little House Books and wanted to discover them with my children as I read them aloud. The introductions and activity suggestions helped me know where we were heading so I could prepare ahead of time.

Some other books you may want to look for are the Little House Sewing Book and the Little House Crafts Book. I was fortunate to find these at "Half Price Books" with everything intact. Another great book is Laura Ingalls Wilder Country which gives a bit more information about Laura and the areas in which she lived. Great pictures, too. I also had the "History Alive Through Music" tape and book called Musical Memories of Laura Ingalls Wilder. It lets you hear some of the songs mentioned.

Just a few other suggestions if you can find them at the library or cheap enough elsewhere.

Sounds great Susan!!! I will definitely look up these books at the library tomorrow.

This may need to be on the main board but while we are on the suject of units..... My family will be filling backpacks for some children in Moldova through the Little Samaitan Mission. I remeber there was some talk last year about using missionaries to springboard into studies of foreign countries. I have no idea where to start on this one though...I am looking for suggestions...We will not be correspondidng per se with these children but we do have there pictures and data..we do not know exactly where they are,but we do know they are in and orphanage somewhere in Moldova(former Soviet Block country)
...So there is my next one for you...I have the children's interest in the subject...I can start with the content area of Geography but what should we do to make it into a unit ? Are there some subjects that don't make a unit? I am stumped and looking for your sage counsel!

thanks, Wendy

Wendy,

WHAT FUN!!

My DD was given a couple really neat books you could get from the library that would help you. One was the Little House Cookbook which has recipes mentioned in each book, and the other was "The World of Little House", which has arts and crafts from each of the books.

My homework assignment:

I am fleshing this out this week with what is available at the library( public and home)

My girls have a frind whose mother was working through the Prairie Primer last year. They were included in several activities and have begged to try do the Primer. I looked at it, thought it was way too much to do(memories of my KONOS days) and said we would do our own version of this...so ,now that we live in the woods, I will keep to my word and our first study this year will be "Little House " ..

My content area will be American History/Geography/Government(for Austin)
and all skill areas could be added to this to make the unit of work.

I think we could do lots of home arts skill building as well as outside work.I will ask that Austin picks a topic to research and teach to the girls. We did this tag-team teaching last year and his confidence soared( so did his ability to use the library) He never picks anything that I would or that the girls would , so this will keep us on our toes. I hope this would last about a month or so. I am really attempting this year to be less scheduled and more willing to let the childrens interests guide the length/direction of the study...I think the older girls could start to do" mini" units on some subject that they are particularly interested in and be the group leader for part of the day. Not on the same scale as Austin, but moving in this direction.

Since my oldest is starting high school, I will be keeping records this year of exactly what he is accomplishing so that credits can be assigned. This is a bit scary for me.

For general info..I have a 14yos,9yod,8yod,6yod and 4yos.
